The love of gardening for the owner of this handsome historic 1827 home was instilled at an early age by his grandfather in Scotland and is immediately evident as you enter. The owner is entirely responsible for its creation and maintenance. His willingness to experiment and not be discouraged is fundamental to all successful gardening. With the exception of some old and established trees and shrubs, most everything you see has been accomplished in just three years. The strict layout of the rose/herb garden contrasts with the informal cottage garden feel of previous spaces. Interesting species of plants, procured by the owner or offered by friends, are tucked here and there creating a tapestry of horticultural interest. Note some small vignettes as you wonder through that are subtle but intentional. The lawn is allowed to grow naturally forgoing the use of fertilizers or chemicals. Clover is encouraged not banished. There is much to admire in this garden and yet one need not be intimidated. Contributed by David Brown
